The International Day of Women and Girls in Science this month is about celebrating the incredible contributions of women leading the way in science, especially as we look toward a more sustainable future.
It’s a chance to shine a light on the important role women and girls play in science and technology while also encouraging more opportunities for them to get involved, grow, and thrive in these fields.
When we think about science, it’s natural to focus on the groundbreaking discoveries that have transformed our world. From life-saving vaccines to groundbreaking climate solutions and exploring the farthest reaches of space, science has an unparalleled capacity to change lives and solve humanity’s most pressing challenges. But science isn’t just about the outcomes; it’s also about the people who make those discoveries possible.
Women remain underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) worldwide. As highlighted in the 2023 Global Gender Gap Report, women make up about 29.2% of the STEM workforce across 146 countries, reflecting a slight improvement compared to earlier years. Imagine the potential if the scientific community truly reflected the full diversity of humanity—if women and girls, who represent half the world’s population, had an equal voice and opportunity to shape its future.
Why Are Women Still Underrepresented in STEM?
The lack of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) isn’t just about numbers—it’s a deeper, more layered issue shaped by society, education, and workplace culture. From a young age, girls are often steered away from STEM because of stereotypes that frame these fields as “male territory”. Without seeing enough women thriving in STEM roles, it can be tough for them to imagine a place for themselves in these careers. Schools sometimes unknowingly reinforce these biases, which can mean fewer girls choosing STEM subjects and, down the line, fewer women entering these industries.
Even for those who make it into the professional world, the challenges don’t stop. Many STEM workplaces are still male-dominated, leaving women feeling like outsiders or undervalued, which can lead to them leaving the field altogether. Add in unconscious biases around hiring and promotions, and the result is a noticeable lack of women in leadership positions.
Why It Matters for a Better World
Diversity in science goes far beyond being a matter of fairness for women—it’s about creating better outcomes for everyone. When people of all genders and backgrounds contribute to scientific efforts, the solutions we develop are more inclusive, impactful, and far-reaching. We foster a culture of innovation, expand the scope of inquiry, and ensure that science serves the needs of all communities. Advancing gender equality in STEM isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a practical one. By breaking down barriers and embracing diversity, we create a stronger foundation for scientific progress that leads to a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
How You Can Make a Difference
You don’t need to be a scientist to support diversity in science. There are many simple and impactful ways to make a difference. Start by encouraging curiosity—help girls explore their interests in STEM through books, experiments, or hands-on activities that capture their imagination. Celebrate role models by sharing stories of inspiring women in science, showing girls what is possible and helping them envision a future in these fields. Challenge stereotypes by speaking out against gender bias and creating spaces where girls feel safe and confident to pursue their passions.
Science is about solving problems, asking questions, and imagining what’s possible. When we bring many different voices to the table, we unlock the full potential of human creativity and innovation. Women and girls have a vital role to play in shaping the future of science—and with the proper support, they can lead the way.
