Project Spotlight: LMS in a Box: Bringing Training to the Depths of the Earth

Project Spotlight: LMS in a Box: Bringing Training to the Depths of the Earth

How do you deliver digital training to people working several kilometres underground with no Wi-Fi access, no mobile signal, and no room for error?

This was the challenge facing our client: a leading training provider for a group of mines. Their team needed to roll out compliance and safety training to hundreds of miners operating deep below the surface. The content was ready. The strategy was sound. But the setting? Not exactly built for broadband.

Connectivity in these environments wasn’t unreliable—it was non-existent.

And that’s where Limina’s incredible Tech and Innovation Team stepped in.

The Problem: Great Content, Nowhere to Host It

The usual approach would be a standard Learning Management System (LMS) hosted in the cloud, perfect for offices, mobile teams, or remote learning.

But the usual wouldn’t work down the mine shafts!

Miners needed to:

  • Complete mandatory training during shifts
  • Access content on-demand from underground control rooms or hubs
  • Track and store progress reliably, without internet access

In short, the training needed to happen offline, without sacrificing the structure, tracking, and interactivity of a full LMS.

The Solution: LMS in a Box (Yes, Really.)

We built what we call LMS in a Box: a fully functional offline training environment powered by a Raspberry Pi.

Using Moodle, an open-source LMS platform , our Tech Team:

  • Downloaded the full LMS and all required training content
  • Installed and configured it on a Raspberry Pi—a compact, cost-effective computer
  • Set up a local area network (LAN) that allowed miners to connect to the LMS underground using tablets, laptops, or mobile devices (no internet required)

The Moodle environment functioned exactly as it would online—quizzes, videos, certificates, tracking—only now, it lived inside a rugged little box, quietly doing its job several kilometres beneath the earth’s surface.

Implementation: Plug, Play, and Train

The LMS in a Box was deployed to key training hubs underground, areas miners passed through or gathered in during shift changes and breaks.

The rollout included:

  • Clear user access instructions
  • Devices configured for underground access
  • A feedback and update loop to sync results back to the cloud when above ground (where possible)

The result? Training didn’t just continue—it improved. Workers could complete modules at their own pace during downtime, with zero connectivity issues and full tracking.

What This Project Proves

This project showcased what we believe at our core: Tech doesn’t have to be big to be brilliant.

  • Innovation doesn’t need perfect conditions—it needs practical insight.
  • LMS solutions aren’t just for the classroom or the cloud—they can go anywhere.
  • Training can meet people where they are—even underground.
